Boys Soccer: Krawzak nets first win as Carmel skipper

LAKE FOREST
First-year Carmel Catholic boys soccer coach Ray Krawzak was The Lion in Summer on Saturday morning.
The former St. Viator Lion, that is.
But the 2004 graduate of the school in Arlington Heights wasn’t anywhere near a stage.
Or movie set.
Krawzak, a science teacher at the school, directed his Corsairs to a 3-2 win over Waukegan in the match for seventh place at the eight-team North Shore Shootout in Lake Forest. The win came 54 years after the film, “The Lion in Winter,” based on a play, hit theaters.
Krawzak appeared relieved and proud after the victory, following 1-0 losses to Deerfield and Lake Forest in the first two days — Aug. 21 and 23 — of the tourney.
Center-midfielders Peter Kolb, Adam Cloe and Michael Scheer scored Carmel’s goals on a steamy Saturday, and Timmy Karich, another center-mid, delivered a pair of assists.
Goalkeeper Michael Zucco notched the win.
“I couldn’t have asked for a better group of leaders than the ones I have,” Krawzak said.
That leadership was on display for all to see at halftime of Saturday’s match. Kolb, Cloe and Sheer each addressed the team, while Krawzak and his assistants huddled and stood some 25 yards away.
“That was their idea,” Krawzak said. “They’re good leaders, good kids.”
Krawzak needed only one word to describe what his life has been like since he took over the program.
“Busy,” he said.
His sideline style as a coach is an ideal one: serious and intense at times, light other times. The man loves balance when it comes to guiding teens.
“I’m trying (to be that kind of coach),” he admitted. “That’s how my favorite soccer coaches were when I played.”
Other results: Lakes edged Round Lake 3-2 for the Shootout title Saturday morning; Highland Park topped Lake Forest 1-0 for third place; and Dundee-Crown needed only five shots-on-goal to down Deerfield 3-1 for fifth.
On the schedule: Carmel (1-2-1), which tied Lake Zurich 1-1 in its season opener, hosts Notre Dame at 10 a.m. Saturday.~
