Girls Volleyball: Dolin, Wilcox true leaders for Mundelein

MUNDELEIN
The team captains of the Mundelein girls volleyball team are senior middle blocker Ashley Dolin and junior setter Maddie Wilcox.
And this is a team that averaged a 3.5 grade-point average the past seven years. Team captains at Mundelein are asked to attend a class during the week as part of the SALT (Student Athletic Leadership Training) program. Athletic director Perry Wilhelm, the program instructor, provides tips on how to be a better team captain.
For Dolin, it’s the final season in a Mundelein uniform. She’s a formidable blocker in the front row, and will serve for the Mustangs this fall as well.
“In four years, she has matured a lot,” Mundelein head coach George Dressen said. “Ashley is very talented and very dedicated. She takes her role as captain very seriously.”
Dolin has made her college choice known, as she will play for Augustana College, in Rock Island, next year.
Dolin and Wilcox have the honor of starting Mustangs’ practices.
“They have the 30 minutes before practice, and they are in charge of the conditioning program,” Dressen said.
Wilcox is in her third season as an important player on this team. This year, she’s in control of the team’s 5-1 offense.
“She moves the ball around extremely well,” Dressen said. “She’s very athletic. She also a very positive young lady.”
Dressen’s team dropped two of three matches in the early going this season. He’s not too worried, though, as it’s taken time to get his regular lineup on the floor.
“This should be one of the best blocking teams we’ve had at Mundelein,” Dressen said. “Now we are working mostly on serve reception.”
Recap: The season opened on Aug. 20, and the Mustangs tripped Waukegan 25-18, 25-10. The next day, Wauconda hammered Mundelein 25-11 in the first set, and won the second set 25-17 after dropping the second set 25-8.
“They caught us off guard in the first set,” Dressen said.
Barrington tripped the Mustangs 25-14, 29-27 on Aug. 22.

“She played club in the offseason,” Dressen said. “She’s very aggressive and very strong. She will be a leading hitter for us.”
Another versatile senior is Adriana Mata, an outside hitter and defensive specialist. The senior class also features Emily East and Kiesha Brown. Another senior is libero Liz Cameron.
On the schedule: The Mustangs will play in the Early Bird Tournament at Fremd, beginning Friday.~
