BRIDGEVIEW — Georgia Waddle had a huge say in the title game.
Lake Forest’s Waddle, who plays collegiately for Northwestern, came up with the decisive goal in the 66th minute as the Chicago Red Stars captured the US National Cup on Sunday at Toyota Park.
The Red Stars, who compete in the Women’s Premier Soccer League’s Elite League (WPSL-Elite), edged the New York Athletic Club 3-2.
Thanks to a goal by Lake Forest’s Kelsey Hough (Colgate), the Red Stars advanced to the championship with a 5-3 victory over the Turbo D’Feeters of North Texas in the semifinal round on Friday. Hough scored her goal in the 48th minute of this high-scoring affair.
Lake Forest’s Nicole Lipp, who will be a senior at Duke, also was in the lineup. She was a starting midfielder.
The Red Stars are loaded with Eclipse Select Soccer Club alumni. In addition to Waddle, Hough and Lipp, the roster includes Libertyville’s Maggie Murnane (Dayton) and Deerfield’s Ali Heller (Wisconsin), along with Arlington Heights’ Vanessa Laxgang (Clemson), Downers Grove’s Nike Sebo (Northwestern), Chicago’s Megan York (Penn), Inverness’s Ariana Kulinczenko and Trail Creek’s Ashleigh Ellenwood (Arkansas).
