Girls Basketball: Vernon Hills will meet Libertyville in NSC title game

One win away.

Vernon Hills’ girls basketball team defeated host Antioch 56-39 on Tuesday to up its NSC Prairie record to 11-0.

The Cougars (20-3), who now have clinched first place in the division, will try to secure a perfect league record on Saturday, when they travel to Lakes (2:30 p.m.). They will host Libertyville in the NSC Championship Game on Feb. 8 at 7 p.m.

This also is the first 20-win season for the VH program.

In the win over Antioch, Sydney Smith led the team with 15 points and four assists.

Abby Springer finished with 14 points, six rebounds and five assists.

Lauren Webb of the Cougars helped out with 13 points and seven rebounds.

And Meri Bennett-Swanson added eight points and five blocks.

As it turned out, Libertyville had the perfect scenario on Tuesday.

The Wildcats, who earned a berth into the NSC Championship Game for the third year in a row, finished 9-3 in the Lake Division by down visiting Lake Forest 56-31 on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Lake Zurich used a last-second shot by Katherine Anderson to knock off Stevenson 44-42 on Tuesday night. With the loss, Stevenson fell to 8-3.

Based on the tiebreaker, Libertyville gets the nod to play in the title game.

Libertyville (19-6) and Vernon Hills (20-3) met in the Mundelein Holiday Tournament in December. The Wildcats escaped with a 41-38 victory.

In the win over Lake Forest, the Wildcats were led in scoring by seniors Alex Haley (12 points) and Kerry Risley (10 points).
