Edgar Nieto, of Mundelein, a student at Dominican University was honored as a Student Laureate by the Lincoln Academy of Illinois during special ceremonies at the State Capitol in Springfield. The following Mundelein High School seniors have been named semifinalists in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program: Stephen Slaughter and John Syme will be eligible for a number of scholarships offered through the program should they become finalists. North Shore’s first recovery high school to open in Lake Bluff

The area’s first high school for teens recovering from alcohol and drug addiction, eating disorders or other mental health issues will open in Lake Bluff June 3. Newport Academy Day School will be the first recovery high school serving Chicago’s North Shore teens, age 15 to 19.

BARRINGTON — For the third year in a row, Barrington eighth-grader Pranav Sivakumar has won the Lake County Spelling Bee. The spelling champ will be heading to Washington D.C. to compete for the national title starting on May 26. “I just kind of picked it up, discovered I was good at it and started studying hard,” Sivakumar said of his spelling skills. Sivakumar, who attends Barrington Middle School-Station Campus, was one of 12 students from schools across the county competing at the College of Lake County on March 20. Perfect math score The Hawthorn School of Dual Language will honor two students who earned a perfect score of 30 on the Continental Mathematics League Contest this year. VERNON HILLS — The agenda at a board meeting for Community High School District 128 changed drastically this week, when administrators and attendees were surprised by students performing a song from the musical “Les Miserables.” The flash mob-style performance was meant as a thank-you to the district for supporting the fine arts at both Vernon Hills and Libertyville High Schools. Cheerleading squad takes the floor Fifteen College of Lake County students, former rivals at high school cheerleading competitions, have formed a new Lancer Cheerleading Club, which gaåve its first public performance at men’s and women’s home basketball games on Jan. 17. Teresa Aguinaldo, interim executive director of Student Life, said she is excited about the revival of cheerleading at CLC after a long hiatus. (The college had a pom-pom squad several years ago and an athletic department-sponsored cheerleading squad in the 1970s, ‘80s and ‘90s).
