Hawthorn students head back to class
Hawthorn District 73 students will all head back to class on Monday, Aug. 27.
This will be a full day of school, as the state no longer will give credit for partial days. Letters outlining teacher assignments and transportation information will be mailed out to all properly registered students on August 15. Additional information, including school supply lists and school calendars, is available at www.hawthorn73.org.
Meetings for new D73 parents
Parents of students who are new to Hawthorn District 73, including new incoming kindergarten students, are encouraged to attend New Parent Information Night or Middle School Orientation at their student’s school. For elementary school families, these parent-only meetings will be held on Aug. 21 at Elementary South, Townline and the School of Dual Language. Elementary North and Aspen will hold their New Parent Meetings on August 22. All elementary meetings will be held at 7 p.m. Middle school families who are new to the district are encouraged to attend New Student Orientation with their middle school student on August 24 from 2 to 3 p.m. For more information, please contact your school.

Acquainted Time set
All elementary students in grades kindergarten through five are invited to visit their school on Aug. 24 for a sneak-peak at the school year. Visit your classroom, drop off supplies, find your locker or cubby – plus it’s a great time to show mom and dad around your school! Get Acquainted Time is scheduled for 1 to 2:30 p.m. at all elementary buildings, with AM and Full-Day Kindergarten students and their families asked to visit from 1 to 1:30 p.m., and PM kindergarten students and their families asked to visit from 2 to 2:30 p.m.
Middle School orientation is Aug. 24
Hawthorn’s middle schoolers (grades six-eight) are invited to visit their school on Aug. 24 from 2 to 3 p.m. to walk through their class schedule, locate lockers, drop off supplies and more. Parents and other family members are welcome to attend. The schools will also hold a special 6th Grade Orientation for our new middle schoolers. This fun event is designed to help the students get to know each other, learn the building, practice using their lockers, and ask questions. Sixth Grade Orientation is from noon to 2 p.m. on Aug. 24 and is for students, only. (Parents are encouraged to join their students at 2 p.m. for “Walk Your Schedule.”) Middle School students and families who are new to District 73 are encouraged to take part in a special orientation that same day beginning at 2 p.m. More information, including your class assignments, will be included in the Welcome Back letter mailing on August 15 to all properly registered students.
New director of human resources named
Hawthorn is pleased to announce that Ms. Lynn Barkley has been named Director of Human Resources.
Ms. Barkley joined the team on Aug. 13, comes to Hawthorn from District 46 in Grayslake where she has served as Assistant Superintendent with responsibilities for curriculum/instruction, Title I, bilingual services, testing and human resources. Previous to that she served as principal of Avon Center School. Ms. Barkley fills the position recently created when Dr. Elieen Conway was appointed superintendent and principal at Emmons School District 33 in Antioch.
Summer reading assignments due Sept. 7
Hawthorn middle schoolers are required to read one book from the provided book list and complete a brief assignment, which is due by September 7. More information is provided at www.hawthorn73.org.

The Hawthorn fall calendar is packed with parent information meetings and special events. Key dates include the beginning of school on Aug. 27.
There is no school on Sept. 3 for Labor Day.
There is no school on Sept. 17 for Rosh Hashanah; no school on Sept. 26 for Yom Kippur
No classes for students on Oct. 5 for Teacher Institute Day
No school on Oct. 8 for Columbus Day.
