Nerheim coasts to GOP state’s attorney nomination

Michael Nerheim won the Republican primary race for Lake County state’s attorney, according to preliminary voting results.
Nerheim of Gurnee took about 45 percent of the votes while Louise Hayes of Lake Bluff and Bryan Winter of Lake Barrington each received about 27 percent of the votes, according to preliminary voting results.
“I would say I’m very proud of my whole campaign staff and my whole team. We look forward to continuing the efforts to November,” Nerheim said.
He said his main priority is to make the State’s Attorney’s Office one everyone can be proud of and to restore the public’s faith in the office.
Nerheim, 38, said he wants to implement a Case Review Panel to provide a fresh set of eyes to older cases. The panel would consist of retired judges, law enforcement and others. The panel would also develop protocols for how to handle new cases, he said.
The Gurnee resident spent seven years as an assistant state’s attorney and is a private defense attorney. He handles felony, juvenile, misdemeanor, traffic and civil cases.
Nerheim received more than 22,000 votes, according to preliminary results, which do not include absentee ballots and early voting.
Hayes, 49, and Winter, 52, each received more than 14,000 votes. Hayes has worked as an assistant state’s attorney since 1990. Winter has been the village attorney for Gurnee and Kildeer for seven years.
