Townline Road in Vernon Hills closed for six hours after crash

A head-on collision early Monday morning caused portions of Townline Road in Vernon Hills to be shut down for more than six hours.

Lake County Sheriff’s officials say a vehicle traveling east on Townline crossed the median and hit another car at full speed. Both directions of Townline Road were closed between about 7:30 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Sheriff’s office spokeswoman Sgt. Sara Balmes said the drivers of both cars survived and were taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, but would not comment on their conditions.

Neither cars had passengers, Balmes said.

Witnesses and impact studies indicate the first vehicle was traveling well over the speed limit when it crossed the median, Balmes said, adding that the impact’s magnitude required an in-depth investigation and that’s why both lanes were closed for so long.

Police have not yet determined what caused the accident, but say cell phone use or illness like a heart attack do not seem to be factors.
