Open skating begins in Vernon Hills

VERNON HILLS – Outdoor ice skating has returned.
The Vernon Hills Park District transformed the basketball and volleyball courts in Century Park North into an ice rink. Traditional ice skating locations include Evergreen Lake (at Deerpath Park), Willow Lake (at Deerpath Park) and Grosse Pointe Pond.
Open skating began Saturday and runs through the end of February.
Park staff frequently checks the ice to ensure its safety. Skating is permitted if a green flag is flying at the pond or rink.
At Century Park North, the pavilion restrooms are open daily, but staffed concessions and free skate rentals are available on Saturdays and Sundays from 1-9 p.m. The lights surrounding the rink turn off at 9 p.m. every night.
Warmer temperatures have delayed the rink’s opening as 48 to 72 hours of below freezing temperatures are required to create a solid base. This the second year the Vernon Hills has had an outdoor rink at Century Park North.
The park district discourages skating at night or while alone at any time of day. Skating is prohibited on Big Bear and Little Bear Lakes.
For up-to-date skating conditions, call the park district’s hotline at 847-996-6616.
