MUNDELEIN — Shannon Baucus will likely be earning a few frequent flier miles during her time as Miss Lake County. The freshman at College of Charleston in South Carolina knows it will be difficult to balance her academic life with her responsibilities as the newly crowned Miss Lake County, as well as being Miss Mundelein, but she says she is ready for the challenge.

Q. What inspired you to get involved in pageants?

A. I got involved after a neighbor, when I was 7, was Little Miss Mundelein. I saw her with the crown and sash and thought that was so cool. I said, “Mom I want to do that.”

Q. What are your future goals?

A. I love volunteering. It is one of my favorite things to do, and I get such a great feeling giving something back. I am always willing to help. Career-wise, it is still a mystery to me. There are so many things I am interested in. I came to school thinking I was going to be in athletic training, but I love Spanish. I love languages. The more I learn about myself, the more I will figure it out.

Q. What is your greatest achievement?

A. So far, being Miss Lake County is my greatest achievement. It will open so many doors for me and help me grow as a person. It is such a great feeling to set a goal and meet it. I set being Miss Lake County as a goal at 8 years old and I met it. It makes the young version of myself proud.

Q. What book made an impact on you?

A. In my religion course, we read “Night” by Elie Wiesel about the Holacaust. I read that and realized how lucky we are to be Americans. It made me realize how much we have.

Q. What is your favorite movie?

A. I love the ’80 movies, “Breakfast Club,” “Sixteen Candles,” but my favorite is “Say Anything.” Of all the ’80s movies, it is a classic.

Q. What’s on your iPod?

A. I listen to a good mix, different genres. There is a lot of country going right now, and Mumford and Sons. It’s easy-listening music that helps me unwind after class.

Q. Are you a summer or winter person?

A. I love snow and I like snow sports. I love skiing, but I love summer too and working at the Mundelein water park. There are good things about both.

Q. What is your favorite Chicago sports team?

A. I am a Cubbies fan, but I also love football. I love the Bears.
