Open house set at Vernon Hills fire station

VERNON HILLS — The Countryside Fire Protection District will host its 53rd annual open house and pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to noon Sunday, Oct. 7, at Station 2, 600 N. Deerpath Drive, Vernon Hills.
The event kicks off Countryside’s observance of Fire Prevention Week. The theme for 2012 is “Have 2 Ways Out!”
Breakfast is $15 per family or $5 a person, and includes all-you-can-eat pancakes, sausage, fruit, juice, milk or coffee with all the fixings. The fire station will be open to the public for tours as well as offering several other activities and safety information exhibits.
Children and adults alike can meet and talk with Smokey the Bear. Children can go through the inflatable pumper fire engine. Attendees also can learn what it takes to become part of the Fremont Community Emergency Response Team.
Dominick’s Pharmacy will be on site to give flu shots for $25. And Hawthorn Wellness Center will provide blood pressures, body mass index measurements, posture analysis, nerve testing, and massages free of charge.
Come meet your local firefighters and paramedics and check out the emergency equipment they use.
