News Briefs: ‘Love Letters’ coming to Mickey Finn’s

“Love Letters,” a comedy-drama tracing the relationship of a man and woman via letters they wrote to one another from their first meeting in second grade to the ups and downs of their lives, is the centerpiece of a special Valentine’s Day evening at the Amber Room in Mickey Finn’s Brewery, 412 N. Milwaukee Ave., Libertyville.

The special, one-night celebration begins at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 14, with a cash bar cocktail hour featuring the song stylings of Libertyville’s Dawn Christine Crowther and Hawthorn Woods’ Laurel Ann Kaiser on piano.

At 7:30 p.m., Liberty Town Productions presents “Love Letters,” starring Maggie Bieritz of Arlington Heights and Scott Metzger of Libertyville. The evening also features a hors d’oeuvres buffet.

Advanced reservations of $22 per person may be made at Mickey Finn’s Brewery, or by visiting www.libertytownproductions.com. Admission is $25 per person at the door.

‘Let’s Wine About Winter’ to be
held Feb. 18

On Feb. 18, from 1-4 p.m., participating shops and restaurants in downtown Libertyville invite shoppers to MainStreet Libertyville’s 6th annual wine tasting event, “Let’s Wine About Winter.”

Shoppers can spend a wintry afternoon browsing the stores and admiring the talents of local artists. A $15 commemorative wine glass will be the “ticket” to the fun event.

The wine glass can be purchased at any one of five convenient distribution sites that day: North Shore Pro Active Health, 112 W. Lake St., Curtis Frame/Back Alley Gallery, 543 N. Milwaukee Ave., former Arden’s Furniture Store, 400 N. Milwaukee Ave., Parkview Gourmet, 121 E. Cook and Christine Anne Couture, 324 N. Milwaukee Ave. Glasses will only be sold at the distribution sites.

No advance reservations are required. A map listing the participants will be available at the stores, restaurants and distribution sites. Participating stores and restaurants will display a pink sign in their windows.

VHHS to present winter play

The Vernon Hills High School Theatre Department will present its winter play, Sideways Stories From Wayside School, Feb. 9-11 at 7:30 p.m. in the VHHS Studio Theatre, 145 Lakeview Parkway, Vernon Hills.

The family-friendly show is based on the Wayside School novels by Louis Sachar. The play follows the shenanigans of the students and teachers that inhabit the 30th story of the Wayside School.

The show is directed by Kevin Phelan and assistant director senior Olivia Candocia.

The running time for the show is approximately one hour and 15 minutes (including intermission). Tickets are $4 for student/child and $5 for adults and may be purchased at the door or during lunch hours the week of Feb. 6.

Dog rescue benefit to be held

“The Art of Dog” fund-raiser benefitting Our House of Hope K-9 Rescue will be held on Saturday, Feb. 11, from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Shear Paradise Pet Salon and Howley Street Pet Boutique, 400 N. Seymour Ave., in Mundelein.

Guests can view and shop local artists hailing from Chicago to Milwaukee; bid on silent auction items and visit the new Howley Street Boutique. Attendees can also pre-order their copy of the Mundelein Hometown Hounds 2013 Calendar, photographed by Randi Heimert.

There will be a $10 per person donation at the door. A percentage of the proceeds will benefit Our House of Hope K-9 Rescue, a local non-profit all breed rescue.

YMCA registration to begin Feb. 13

Registration for the wide variety of spring programs for the whole family offered at the Central YMCA in Vernon Hills and the Northern Lake YMCA in Waukegan begins on Feb. 13.

Spring fitness classes feature some new offerings including ZumbAtomics for kids, Piloxing and Yogalates. Community members also will be able to register for other activities at the Y such as family swim lessons, martial arts, music lessons, learning CPR and little chef’s classes.

Persons should sign up by Feb. 19 to avoid higher late-registration fees for some classes.

Guitarist to perform at Cook Library

Edgar Cruz, an award-winning, fingerstyle guitarist, will be performing on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 10:30 a.m. at the Cook Park Library, 413 N. Milwaukee Ave., Libertyville.

Having recorded more than 16 CDs and two DVDs in styles ranging from flamenco to pop to jazz, Cruz is perhaps best known for his fingerstyle arrangement of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” of which his YouTube video received more than 10,000,000 hits worldwide.

Audience participation is encouraged. The Lake County Community Concert Association is offering this family concert as a gift to the library district. No registration is required.
