Vernon Hills Golf Course, others cited for serving alcohol to minors

Updated: February 20, 2012 8:35AM

The Vernon Hills Golf Course was one of three establishments in the village cited for serving alcohol to minors during a recent compliance check.

The golf course, located at 291 Evergreen Drive, was cited with sale of alcohol to a minor along with Sushi Masa, 701 Milwaukee Ave., and the Peacock Restaurant at 700 Milwaukee Ave., following undercover compliance checks conducted by Vernon Hills Police in December.

Each of the establishments appeared before the Vernon Hills Village Board for a liquor commission hearing on Jan. 10. The establishments were issued a $500 fine but will not have to pay the fines if they don’t have another violation in the next 12 months, according to Village Manager Mike Allison.

“It’s important not to allow underage individuals to drink,” said Allison. “The property we own we did a compliance check and they’re just like anybody else.”

The Vernon Hills Golf Course is owned by the village but is managed by Kemper Sports Management, which operates the golf course and food and beverage service.

O.B. Sanders, general manager at the Vernon Hills Golf Course, said a bartender at the golf course mistakenly served an underage person.

“It was the first violation in 16 years,” Sanders said. “He just made a mistake.”

Sanders said the bartender still works for the golf course but the golf course has reiterated the rules for serving alcohol to its employees.
