Police find nothing after gun report near Hawthorn Elementary South
VERNON HILLS – Police were called to Hawthorn Elementary South in Vernon Hills on Monday to investigate a report of a man with a gun and a dead dog.
Principal Jill Martin said around 12:10 p.m. Monday some second- and third-graders reported seeing a man standing on a hill across from the school. Police dispatch said it was a man with a gun and a dead black dog. Martin said the school called police to have the area checked and that police found nothing.
She sent a letter home with students to let the parents know about and clarify the situation.
“In an abundance of caution, I contacted the Vernon Hills police department to investigate the situation. A number of officers immediately arrived on scene to search the areas surrounding the schools. The police found no evidence of any problem,” Martin wrote.
As a precaution, police continued to canvass the area at dismissal.
“There is no threat to the children or the Hawthorn community,” Martin wrote. “We will continue to do everything possible to keep our community safe.”
