Vernon Hills — A portable toilet at Lake Charles Park in Vernon Hills was burned to the ground on Friday, Oct. 5.
The structure was totally destroyed, Superintendent of Parks Michael Moorman told park commissioners on Oct. 25.
A metal shell that encased the plastic portable toilet, which blocks wind and sun, suffered only smoke damage and has since been cleaned.
Waste Management owned the portable toilet and is the process of replacing it.
Moorman said an accelerant of some sort was definitely used.
Tom Ritter, superintendent of recreation, said similar incidents occur every few years, but usually involve toilet paper being ignited and damaging just one side of the structure.
The use of an accelerant, Ritter said, created a high risk of accident or spreading, and makes the case more important.
Vernon Hills police say they have a lead, but the investigation is still ongoing.
